A Practical Smart Security Upgrade for an Established Caulfield South Home
Upgrading security in an established home often means working with existing doors, walls, cabling and finishes. For this Caulfield South residence, Austrend delivered a targeted smart security upgrade combining smart access, CCTV, video intercom and network connectivity without requiring a full home automation rebuild.

The brief
How the project started
Unlike a new build, retrofit security work must adapt to the property that is already there. Existing doors, decorative metalwork, brickwork, power locations and network access all affect how devices can be installed. The goal was therefore not simply to add individual devices, but to create a practical security system that worked with the home’s existing structure and could be used easily every day.

Our approach
How we shaped the solution
The homeowner wanted to strengthen everyday security and make access to the property easier to manage. Rather than replacing the home’s existing infrastructure, the project focused on integrating modern security technology into the existing residence.
The completed solution combines smart locks at key entry points, exterior surveillance cameras, a gate video intercom and an indoor monitoring station. Network equipment was also installed to provide the connectivity required for reliable operation.

Systems we installed
Project Highlight 01 — Smarter Access Without Replacing Existing Doors
Smart locks were fitted to existing entry doors, including a decorative metal security door and an internal/garage access door. This allowed the homeowner to modernise access while retaining the existing doors and architectural features. The retrofit required careful fitting around the existing lock hardware and door construction, demonstrating how smart access can be added to established homes without a major renovation.
Project Highlight 02 — CCTV Coverage Around the Home
Exterior cameras were positioned around the residence to provide visibility across key approaches and access areas. The installation included working at height and routing equipment around the existing brick exterior while keeping the finished devices compact and unobtrusive. The result gives the homeowner a clearer view of activity around the property while keeping the installation visually consistent with the home.
Project Highlight 03 — See and Speak to Visitors at the Gate
A video intercom was installed at the front gate so visitors can be identified before access is granted. An indoor monitor provides a convenient interface for viewing the entrance and communicating with visitors from inside the home. This brings the gate, cameras and household security experience together in a more convenient way than relying on a traditional doorbell alone.
Reliable Connectivity Behind the Security System
Connected security devices depend on reliable network coverage. Network equipment was added inside the home to support communication between the smart security components and provide a stable foundation for remote and local access.
The result
The Caulfield South home now has a more complete security layer across access, surveillance and visitor management. The homeowner can secure key doors with smart locks, monitor important exterior areas with CCTV and manage visitors through the gate intercom and indoor display. Most importantly, the upgrade was achieved as a retrofit to an existing residence — demonstrating that a practical smart security system does not require a new build or a full-scale home automation project.
